My first visit to Elio Sandri's winery, Cascina Disa in Perno, near Monforte d'Alba produced an old fashioned first class tasting over three hours, including visiting fifteen wines from seven different vintages. We started with a visit to the Vigna Disa vineyard next to the winery, where Elio's affection for his vineyards was clearly demonstrated. His generous disposition and very courteous way of making guests feel at home in his winery, combined with his talent for producing singularly unhurried and vibrant high-quality wines that speak with such veracity of their origin genuinely impressed me. Here are my thoughts on this extensive tasting:
2019 Cascina Disa Dolcetto (cask sample)This is very enticing with cool blue fruits, a touch of lavender and sweet violets. Languid entry, then the virile energy of 2019 emerges which adds a nice level of vibrancy. With silky tannins and fragrant depth throughout, this is a truly first-class Dolcetto with real pedigree.
2019 Cascina Disa Barbera Superiore (cask sample)A well-defined nose of zesty red fruits, earth tones and plum confit, with real cut and crispness. The mid-weight palate is zesty and very mineral, with racy tension, lithe tannins and bright acidity. The redcurrant and pink peppercorns infused finish is pleasant, but curiously today this lacks the weight and impact found in the 2019 Dolcetto. Very good.
2019 Cascina Disa Langhe Nebbiolo (cask sample)The Nebbiolo fruit comes from the vines planted near the forest at the top of the Vigna Disa vineyard. A handsome array of cool violets, fresh herbs, supple red fruits and black cherries perfumes both the nose and palate. The palate is very harmonious and energetic, with elegant tannins and a particularly refined finish for a Langhe Nebbiolo. Excellent value here.
2019 Cascina Disa Barolo Perno Riserva (cask sample)The Cascina Disa Riserva is a selection of fruit from the best plants across a variety of their vineyards. Both the nose and palate display layers of violets, mint, dried fennel and exotic Asian spices. With velour weight and structural harmony, this is so long, pure and elegant. The tannins are remarkably integrated and poised with Bentley saloon-like glide and the very long finish shows refined depth and finesse. Exceptional potential. Saluti Elio!
2019 Cascina Disa Barolo Perno “Vigna Disa” (cask sample)Oh my goodness: Such a concentrated and compelling nose of succulent black fruits, anise and black pepper with dark Asian spices, enlivened with crushed herbs and wild grasses. After having walked around this vineyard this afternoon, this Barolo has such an accurate sense of place. The palate has a Richebourg like texture, with harmonious depth, focus and great elegance. The tannins are very long and shapely and the unhurried stillness and balance on the epic finish is quite compelling. Great potential.
2019 Cascina Disa Barolo Perno “Vigna Ceretta” (cask sample)“Vigna Ceretta” is a single vineyard located in the Perno region of Monforte d’Alba, as distinct from the Ceretta vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba. I suspect the 2019 vintage will be the first release of “Vigna Ceretta” as a Cru Barolo for Elio Sandri. This is deep, masculine and somnolent today, with layers of black fruits, dark roses, sweet Asian spices and crushed wild grasses and herbs. More reticent, sleek and restrained than the exuberant “Vigna Disa”, there is an underlying mineral power and tension here which is slowly resolving. You can feel the drive and vertical tension of the fine tannic structure that speaks of a very age-worthy Barolo. The finish is very long and detailed. Potentially very, very grand.
2018 Cascina Disa Langhe Nebbiolo (from bottle)Very digest, bright and sapid with fresh red fruits, lithe silky tannins and an uplifting floral dimension throughout. This is ready to play as it is very charming and enjoyable right now. Very good.
2018 Cascina Disa Barolo Perno (cask sample)A fragrant melange of dark cherries, raspberries, earthy herbs, menthol and a touch of camphor emerges from the glass. The palate displays good attack and vibrancy, with layers of eucalyptus, mint and camphor in the foreground before pretty rosehip and floral notes arise. The tannins are satin textured and well integrated. A lithe and fragrant red-hued and lingering finish speaks of the digest character of the 2018 vintage. Excellent.
2017 Cascina Disa Barolo Perno (vat sample)There is no Barolo Perno Riserva in 2017. A torrid Summer made for a challenging year to produce highly nuanced Barolo, especially when compared to the precision and finesse of 2016 and the evident quality of 2019, as is the case in this extensive tasting. Aromatically, the 2017 Barolo Perno is ripe and succulent with a generous nose of confit red fruits, mint and spices. The palate has a distinct Rubenesque character., while the tannins are fine-grained and more prominent than expected. The finish is round and generous, with good persistence. The solar character of the vintage dominates today, muting the characteristic harmony and elegance of Elio’s style. It may well be a late developer and another look in six months may reveal more nuance. Very good.
2016 Cascina Disa Barolo Perno Riserva (cask sample)Harvested on 17 October 2016. The barrel sample is pure, focussed and exhilarating, with violets, eucalyptus, camphor and an abundance of flowers. The finesse, balance and harmony displayed suggests this will be a profound wine. The unhurried core is richly scented and satin-textured and the structure is perfect for long ageing. With a very long and multifaceted finish and great balance (reminiscent of 2004), I can only say “Grande Elio.” Exceptional.
2015 Cascina Disa Barolo Perno (from bottle)A real crowd-pleaser with generous aromatic depth to its cool red fruit, spice and mint core. The palate is so fragrant and plump, with velvet tannins and its supple charm is immediately evident. As with a lot of 2015’s, it just lacks that last few yards on the finish in terms of detail that would make it a truly notable wine. Very supple and full of sap, with both harmony and very good savour throughout, this is so enjoyable. Highly Recommended.
2015 Cascina Disa Barolo Perno Riserva (from bottle)Raised in cement and Botte for four years, there is a notable extra dimension of lift and precision to the nose, where the wild herbs and grasses, camphor and Asian spices have real definition amidst the generous waves of savoury red and black fruits. The palate is far more stately and impressively detailed than the Classico, with real vertical lift and energy to the structure. The tannins are very refined and the very persistent finish is so lifted and focussed. Racy, exciting and vibrant, this is an outstanding wine from the 2015 vintage. Hats off to Elio Sandri! A Grand wine.
2014 Cascina Disa Barolo Perno (from bottle)Very fresh and fine veined, with a subtle salinity and mineral edge on both the nose and palate. Definitely truncated by a difficult growing season, the palate is pared back, with a mid-weight structure and the somewhat granular tannins. There is a pleasant mineral savour to the short but agreeable finish. Pleasant.
2013 Cascina Disa Barolo Perno Riserva (from bottle)Back in the major chords, The 2013 Barolo Perno Riserva displays power, energy and elegance, with layers of concentrated muscular depth to its spicy red fruits, bramble black fruits, wild herb, mint and fennel rich core. Chatting about this wine with Elio, he agreed that it was reminiscent of 2001, with its grand structure and long sweeping tannins. With real focus, clarity and depth throughout, the finish is so long and persistent. It is evolving at a glacial pace at present and so patience is required for this is very grand and dramatic Riserva. But, the reward will be a very handsome one. Excellent.
2013 “Ciman” Vino Rosso (from bottle)We finish this extensive tasting with a remarkable Vino Rosso. Made from a selection of Cascina Disa’s Perno Barolo vineyard fruit, this wine doesn’t fit the Barolo DOCG rating system as it is raised for six years in a cement vat before being bottled. A profound nose of mineral etched violets, rosehips and redcurrants, melded with wild herbs, this is all angles and vectors in the mouth, being a case study in geometry rather than linear evolution. With shards of ultra-fine tannin and such vibrant acidity, combined with the power of the 2013 vintage, it displays real savoury depth, precision and excellent length. Vive la difference. Very, very impressive.
